Garden State Surf

I checked out the pdf version of the first issue of Garden State Surf. It looks really sweet. I have to give it an unsolicited two thumbs up... can't wait to get my hands on a hard copy. Look for it at your local NJ surf shop (and a few locations in NYC).

Jaws Returns

There's been a lot of hype around the recent 'attack' in New Jersey. A story on surfline by Jon Coen puts things in perspective. The International Shark Attack File has some interesting data including statistics on shark attacks in the USA and around the world.

A Big Win for NYC Surfers

Congratulations to the New York City Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. Today it's finally legal to surf in New York City. Hopefully this will end the ticketing of surfers in Rockaway and prevent any scenes like this.

3mm Gloves?

Transworld Surf is running an article about Jersey winter waves. "5/4 fullsuit with built-in hood, 7mm booties, 3mm gloves, vaseline smeared on your face, and you're good to go." Ok, 3mm gloves... not going to cut it, vaseline on the face... I don't think so.

Endless Winter

The New York Times is running a story explaining why snowy beaches, arctic winds and 32-degree water are part of the appeal for winter surfers in Narragansett, RI. The Times goes on to say "The possibility of being alone on an empty shore with an excellent wave is what drives winter surf enthusiasts to the secluded points and reefs along the jagged New England coastline.".

Some Days

Surfline is running a story about midwinter New Jersey dish'in out thick, cold barrels for a hearty few. I think JET 1A's recent gallery which looks more artic than east coast is appropriate for this post.

Noaa's nowCOAST

Check out Noaa's new web mapping portal to real-time coastal observations and forecasts. It's pretty cool. Make sure you read the instructions and have patience. It takes a little while to get the hang of it.

North Shore Wedding

I'm happy to announce I'm getting married (and hopefully surfing or at least watching) on the North Shore of Oahu.

A big thank you to all the photographers and videographers who have allowed me to link to their work without serving me papers. Keep the submissions coming! I'll post them when I return.

Endless Sunmmer

The Atlantic News featured a story about New Hampshire's Shane Smith. Shane is the owner of 2SI an east coast custom surfboard shop and factory.

While we're on the shaper topic ubersurf.com has a good article on how to choose a shaper.

New Jersey is a GO!

The New Jersey Red Bull Ice Break qualifier is a go today. Even with conditions looking less than ideal I'm looking forward to seeing some pics and video posted. I'll post links as soon as I see them so stay tuned.

The next big east coast contest is The Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro being held January 2-7, 2005.

A field of more than 220 professional surfers are expected for The Sebastian Inlet Pro including Kelly Slater. The event will also feature several current and former members of the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tour. This should be a good one.

Terra Satellite

NASA's Terra satellite is primarily used to provide a view of fires across the entire United States. But it also gets some amazing photos of hurricanes.

Although Alex was a mild wave producer he sure makes a killer desktop background.

Hurricane Hopeful

Finally got over to Hurricane Hopeful last night. I hung out with some fellow Surfrider NYC members and tried HH's "Damn good soup". The soup lived up to its repution and I gave the atmosphere two thumbs up. The next time you're in Brooklyn make sure to check the place out. Here's a review posted on FREEwilliamsburg.
